Team Awareness Kit (TAK)
TAK is a Government Owned Technology which facilitates multi-agency communication; user navigation via GPS, elevation, and digital imagery; and real-time situational awareness from user and sensor input.
TAK links sensor data, such as street cameras and drone feeds, with map overlays, providing real-time situational awareness of ongoing events disseminated through a cellular network.

Understanding the TAK Ecosystem
Though often referred to as ATAK, the most commonly used application, TAK is the over arching program name for all versions of the software. TAK comes in two versions, a military version (MIL-TAK) and a civilian version (CIV-TAK). Both versions are interoperable when used on the same TAK Server.

WinTAK: Windows Team Awareness Kit for use on Windows Computers. Will not accept military specific plugins. Interoperable with WinTAK and ATAK-PR users. WinTAK best applied with stationary units and command centers.
ATAK-PR: Android Team Awareness Kit – Public Release available to all US citizens for use and download on Android devices. Will not accept any additional plugins. Best applied with civil support (volunteers, school district, public works)

How TAK Works
All TAK programs (MIL or CIV, ATAK or WinTAK) share the same core. Having the same core allows for interoperability (communications, encryption, mapping) across the TAK sweet of programs.
The API determines what version of TAK the user has and limits the type of plugins it can ingest.
While the API determines the type of plugins TAK can ingest, your Department can choose which available plugins are authorized for use. This allows for each organization to custom tailor TAK to meet their specific mission needs.
For CIV-TAK the most common way to get the most out of TAK is to connect to TAK Server via a cellular (preferable priority) service.
